Hadhrat Thanvi Rahmatullahi Alayh says,
With regards to the Akhirat, people are bold in committing sin and then they say that ‘there is nothing to worry about because Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala is الغفور الرحيم Ghafuurur Raheem; Allah is All Forgiving, Allah is the Merciful.
In other words, they are bold in committing sin due to relying on the Forgiveness and the Mercy of Allah.
Hadhrat Thanvi Rahmatullahi Alayh says,
I reply to what people say, ‘isn’t Allah Ghafurur Raheem in the Dunya also?
Then why do you fear those things which should be feared when Allah is Ghafurur Raheem in the Dunya as well?
He gives an example.
If you feel and understand that Allah is Ghafurur Raheem, then why don’t you eat poison in this Dunya?
The thing is that the harm of Dunya is infront of our eyes; it is something which we can see, but we do not know and have not seen the harm of the Akhirat yet.
It is only after Maut that the Haqeeqat will be known…
But then it is too late!
After Maut, a person will get to know the Haqeeqat but then it is too late.
So in this Malfuz, Hadhrat Thanvi Rahmatullahi Alayh raises a very common objection or statement made by people.
When they are told about committing sin, they say that ‘Allah is Ghafurur Raheem, we don’t need to worry. Yes we are sinning but Allah is going to forgive us. Allah is very forgiving, Allah is very Merciful’, and saying that, they continue to sin. They continue to boldly sin without any fear of the Anger and the Adhaab of Allah.
So this is something which we have talked about and mentioned many times.
Hadhrat Thanvi Rahmatullahi Alayh is talking about that same thing that, ‘people are bold in committing sin and when they are told anything, they say that ‘Allah is Ghafurur Raheem and Allah is going to forgive.’
So Hadhrat Thanvi Rahmatullahi Alayh gives a Jawaab to that, – what answer can be given to a person who says that.
He says that, ‘you believe that Allah is Ghafurur Raheem with regards to the Akhirat, that is why you are bold in committing sin because you have this Yaqeen that, ‘Allah is Ghafurur Raheem in the Akhirat; Allah will not punish you, Allah will forgive you…’ In other words, Allah will not allow the negative and harmful consequence of your action to reach you…
When a person says Allah is Ghafurur Raheem and he continues to sin, what is he saying? He is saying that, ‘I will sin but Allah will not punish me because Allah is going to forgive me. The negative effect and the negative consequence of sinning which would have been Adhaab in the Akhirat will not come to me because Allah is going to forgive me.’
So Hadhrat Thanvi Rahmatullahi Alayh is saying,
‘When you believe that Allah is Ghafurur Raheem in the Akhirat, isn’t Allah Ghafurur Raheem in the Dunya as well?’
The answer to that is, ofcourse!
Allah is Ghafurur Raheem everywhere. The quality of Allah being Ghafur and the quality of Allah being Raheem is not limited to Akhirat. Allah is Ghafurur Raheem at every point. In other words, before our Maut also and right now also, Allah is Ghafur and Allah is Raheem – Allah Forgives and Allah is Merciful.
When you do believe that (a person has to believe it because if he doesn’t, then he is not a Muslim) Allah is Ghafurur Raheem in the Dunya as well, then why do you fear those things which should be feared/bring fear in a person in this Dunya and when you have the Yaqeen that Allah is going to block you from the negative effects and consequences in the Dunya as well, then why don’t you have poison?
In other words, just like how you believe that you can continue to sin and Allah is not going to punish you; the negative and harmful consequence of your sinning is not going to come to you, then you should also believe that the harmful consequence of you swallowing poison will not come to you, you will be blocked from that as well because Allah is Ghafurur Raheem in Dunya also!
So why don’t you go and eat poison?
Obviously no one is going to eat poison. Everyone is scared…
Why are they scared?
It is because they know that if they are going to swallow poison then they are going to die. There suddenly now Allah is not Ghafurur Raheem…In other words, there is nothing about Allah blocking the harmful consequence of the action of swallowing poison, but Ajeeb…with regards to Akhirat, they are bold! They are committing sin which brings Adhaab but they are not worried about the Adhaab; they don’t fear the Adhaab, but they fear the Maut which may come due to swallowing the poison. Then he ends off and says in conclusion,
The thing is that, the harm of Dunya is something which we can see; a person can see with his eyes the harm of swallowing poison.
He understands and it is something which can be witnessed that if a person is going to swallow poison, he is going to die.
But as far as Akhirat is concerned, the harm of Akhirat is not in front of us!
We commit a sin, we don’t see the Adhaab coming…the Adhaab is not in front of us because the Adhaab is in the Akhirat, it is hidden.’
We don’t know about the harm of the Akhirat; the negative consequences of sinning that is going to come in the form of Adhaab in the Akhirat. It is not in front of us.
When will it come in front of us?
But then it is too late to do anything!
We need to bring the Dharar and the harm of Akhirat in front of our eyes right now and that is the whole point of making the Muraqabah of Maut for example, or the Muraqabah of Jahannam.
That is the whole point of Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala describing the Adhaab of Jahannam and the Day of Qiyamat in the Qur’an.
That is the whole Maqsad behind the detailed descriptions of the Adhaab in the Ahadith; it is to bring the Haqeeqat and the reality in front of us so that we understand, ‘if we are going to sin then that is what is waiting for us, we may not be able to see it right now but we have been informed about it through such sources which are beyond being, question and doubt.
We have Yaqeen on the truth of those sources. We have Imaan on those sources – the Qur’an and the Hadith…Those sources are telling us that the Adhaab is there and this is how it is, this is how painful, horrific and terrifying it is…’
Why are they telling us?
So that we can stop sinning.
But today we see, despite having the descriptions of Jahannam and Adhaab, we still continue to boldly sin!
The lesson for us in this Malfuz is,
We need to bring fear into us.
Just like how we have fear for certain things in this Dunya and that is why we won’t do them; (we fear swallowing poison, so we won’t swallow it), in the same way we need to bring the fear because it has gone down.
We have become bold and fearless! For that, we need to make these different Muraqabah under the guidance of a Shaykh. We need to go and consult our Shaykh, ‘I don’t have that fear, what can I do to bring that fear into me so that I can stay away from sinning and make Taubah from all my sins.’
May Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala grant us the Tawfiq.
May Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala grant us the ability to bring the required amount of fear into us.
What is the required amount of fear?
It is that much fear which can form a barrier between us and sinning.
That is the main Maqsad of the fear.
May Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala grant all of us that.
May Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala grant all of us the Tawfiq of making Taubah.
May Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala save us from continuing to boldly sin, إنشاء الله تعالى (Inshaallah Ta’ala)
