Tenth Malfuz

Hadhrat Thanvi Rahmatullahi Alayh said,

While I was still a student in the Darul Uloom Deoband, a fear overcame me...

After Maghrib, I presented myself in the Khidmat of Hadhrat Maulana Muhammad Ya’qub Nanotwi Rahmatullahi Alayh (who was his Ustaadh, a very very great Wali of Allah and the senior most Ustaadh in Deoband at that time).

He says,

I told him that, Hadhrat, tell me something through which I can become content and consoled that ‘yes, my Khaatimah – ending, my Maut will be upon Imaan…

Immediately Hadhrat Maulana Yaqub Rahmatullahi Alayh said out of surprise, ‘are you requesting for Kufr?’

Then he went on to explain…

For a person to be at peace and content with himself is Kufr in itself.

Then Hadhrat Thanvi Rahmatullahi Alayh said,

Look, we thought this was a Ne’mat – to be at peace with regards to our Maut, coming up on Imaan and because of that we came desiring for it that we will be told something, but there Hadhrat Maulana Yaqub Nanotwi exposed the Kufr of what we were considering to be a Ne’mat.

This is what is necessary. These are our needs. These things which a person can learn only and only through Sohbat – companionship of the Awliyaa, where are you going to find these things in the Kitaabs?

We were thinking that to be at peace and to be content with our ending being upon Imaan being a very great internal Ne’mat (bounty), but it actually was exposed to be an internal punishment. We got to know that it was a punishment, not a Ne’mat.

In this Malfuz, Hadhrat Thanvi Rahmatullahi Alayh is mentioning a few things;

1) Fear

The fear which pushed him to go to Hadhrat Nanotwi Rahmatullahi Alayh to make such a request.

When our Akaabireen would get a fear, when something would come up, when they would be overcome by a certain thought, then they would not sit and try to deal with it themselves. They would immediately go to their Akaabireen and into the Khidmat of their Awliyaa and Masha’ikh and present to them what they were feeling (the fear or whatever it was). This is what Hadhrat Thanvi Rahmatullahi Alayh did because they would never consider themselves to be self sufficient. They would always consider themselves to be Mohtaaj – in need of someone regardless of how high they were and who they were.

So this fear was of passing away without Imaan.

So Hadhrat Thanvi Rahmatullahi Alayh went to Hadhrat Maulana Nanotwi Rahmatullahi Alayh to request him to say something which would put him at ease with regards to his Maut. In other words, he wanted Hadhrat Maulana Yaqub Nanotwi Rahmatullahi Alayh to say something to remove that fear; the fear of passing away without Imaan.

This is why he went, ‘Hadhrat, tell me something through which I can get Itminaan; I can get peace and contentment through this and the fear can be removed with regards to my Khaatimah and my Maut so that the fear does not remain of passing away upon Kufr. Hadhrat, tell me something which would reassure me that my Maut will come upon Imaan.’

This is what he wanted and he thought that this was a great Ne’mat to be at peace and ease with regards to this.

He considered it to be a great Ne’mat, but when he went and made this request to Hadhrat Maulana Yaqub Nanotwi Rahmatullahi Alayh, immediately he replied, ‘are you requesting me for Kufr?’

Why?

It is because for a person to be at ease with regards to his Imaan is Kufr.

For a person to be at ease with regards to his Imaan is Kufr.

For a person to be at ease with regards to his Maut coming upon Imaan is Kufr.

In other words, the fear which Hadhrat Thanvi Rahmatullahi Alayh had was a fear that was supposed to be there and that is exactly what we are supposed to have, not that we try to remove that fear and try to get peace with regards to that.

So he says after that,

See, that which we thought was a Ne’mat – removing that fear and that is why we came with this desire that we should get this Ne’mat of the fear being removed; the fear of passing away without Imaan, but Hadhrat Maulana Yaqub Nanotwi Rahmatullahi Alayh opened this Haqeeqat and reality to him that, ‘the fear which you have of passing away upon Kufr is Ayn Matluub – this fear is exactly what is required and for a person to wish and desire  for this fear to be removed is actually wishing and requesting for Kufr because for a person to become content and be at peace with regards to his Imaan and his Maut coming on Imaan.

Then he said,

See that is what is necessary – Sohbat.

These are things which you learn from companionship of the Awliyaa. You will not not find these things in the Kitaabs. But here we were thinking that for a person to be in Itminaan with regards to his Imaan is a great Ne’mat, but in reality it turned out to be the opposite. It turned out to be a very great punishment – for a person to be at ease.

From this, we get to know;

  • Fear of falling into Kufr at present and in the future, the fear of passing away without Imaan is a fear which should be in us at every moment of our lives.

The moment this fear leaves us then that is a very dangerous state.

But unfortunately today we are all at peace with regards to our Deen and our Imaan…

What is the proof of that?

The glaring proof which is in front of our eyes is this that we are making no effort with regards to strengthening our Imaan!

We are making no effort with regards to our Deen!

We are making no effort with regards to reforming ourselves!

Nothing! We are not doing anything!

This is the bitter truth and the bitter reality that the daily struggle and the daily effort which we are all supposed to be involved in is not there!

Why?

It is because the fear is not there!

The fear of losing Imaan is not there!

The fear of losing our Deen is not there!

The fear of passing away upon Kufr is not there!

That is why we are at so much peace and in so much contentment with regards to our Deen and our Imaan. We feel that Maut upon Imaan is a guarantee for us. We feel that our Imaan is protected and that is why we are in a state of relaxation; we are very relaxed.

We are not bothered!

We are not interested!

That is a very very dangerous state to be in and we are all in this state at this point.

This is something to be very scared of.

We need to make Taubah and we need to start doing something about this.

We need to start asking ourselves, ‘why don’t I have this fear? Who has given me the guarantee of Imaan? Who has given me the guarantee that I have got Imaan at this point and at this moment? Who has given me this guarantee that my Maut is going to come upon Imaan?’ There is no guarantee and we are not making the effort which is supposed to be made! So all the more, there is no guarantee because the fear is not there.

That is one lesson that we find in this Malfuz.

2) Sohbat

The second lesson is the importance of Sohbat; what a person can learn and get from the companionship of the Awliyaa, will never be able to get from Kitaabs and on his own, it is not possible and that is why we stress so much on Sohbat.

It is because that is the root and the foundation of the strengthening of our Deen and our Imaan.

Without Sohbat and without companionship of the Awliyaa, for a person’s Imaan and Deen to get strengthened is very very very difficult. It is very close to being impossible but again this is something which we ignore. Sohbat and companionship is something which we are not bothered and worried about.

May Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala grant us this fear.

May Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala grant us this Fikr.

May Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala grant us this understanding.

May Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala grant us the Tawfiq to start making an effort and to start doing Amal on all of these things before it is too late.
