What does Sohbat e Ahlullah mean?

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

What does Sohbat e Ahlullah mean?

Does it simply mean staying in the Companionship of the Ahlullah?

Is it just that much?

Or is it more than that? Staying in the Companionship of the Ahlullah.

Is it just that much?

No! it is not just that much. If it was just that much then Abu Jahl would have been a senior Sahabah.

Why?

Because he spent time in the Companionship of Nabi Sallallaahu Alaihi wa Sallam. He was there in the presence of Nabi Sallallaahu Alaihi wa Sallam. So Sohbat e Ahlullah was there. And which Ahlullah? Nabi Sallallaahu Alaihi wa Sallam! And yet Abu Jahl is the Fir’aun of this Ummat. It is in the Hadith. The worst of the Kuffaar and the Mushrikeen was Abu Jahl.

Then we have Abu Lahab.

Abu Lahab was the Chaacha (uncle). He was the Chaacha of Nabi Sallallaahu Alaihi wa Sallam.

Did he not spend any time with Nabi Sallallaahu Alaihi wa Sallam?

Of course he did!

And yet, what happened to Abu Lahab?

Allah revealed a Surah about him. So much of Zillat, that till the day of Qiyamah every small small child also is reciting the Surah and cursing Abu Lahab. The curse upon Abu Lahab are inside the Quran. You curse Abu Lahab in the Quran, you are getting Sawaab for it.

What is it?

تَبَّتۡ يَدَاۤ اَبِىۡ لَهَبٍ وَّتَبَّؕ

Tabbat yadaa abi lahabiu wa tabb.

What is that?

That is curse.

تَبَّتۡ يَدَا

Tabbat yadaa

May his hands be destroyed.

What is that?

That is Badd-Dua, a curse.

You are reciting it, you are cursing him and you are getting Sawaab for it. You are getting Sawaab for it because you are reciting the Quran. For every Harf you are getting Sawaab.

What happened?

The same Abu Lahab who was in the presence and Companionship of Nabi Sallallaahu Alaihi wa Sallam and yet this is his Haal. And so many others. So, from that we get to know that, simply just on its own Sohbat e Ahlullah is not enough.

Rather, what is necessary?

Necessary is Sohbat e Ahlullah with the Niyat of Islaah. This was the difference.

Abu Jahl, when he would be in the presence of Nabi Sallallaahu Alaihi wa Sallam, he was not there with the Niyat of Islaah. He was not there with the Niyat of reforming himself, obviously. So nothing happened. There was no effect on him. So Sohbat e Ahlullah works when you have the Niyat of reformation. Because the Ahlullah, the Mashaykh are like mirrors.

What is the Maqsad of going into the Companionship of the Ahlullah?

The Maqsad is that, you are far from the mirror, so you did not know what is wrong and what is on your face. The faults and the problems and the sicknesses that are inside, the person did not know about that. He was oblivious. When the person goes into the Sohbat of the Ahlullah, the Ahlullah are like the mirrors. When you go in front of a mirror then suddenly you say, “I never knew what my face was like. It is covered in dirt, it is covered in stains, I never knew that.”

Why?

Why did he not know?

Because he was not in front of the mirror.

So he did not know.

So he was living his life thinking that he is completely pure.

As everyone does.

Today, the default Haal is that everyone is living their lives in this way that ‘I am pure’. But when we go into the Sohbat of the Ahlullah with the Niyat of Islaah, then the Ahlullah are like mirrors, the Maqsad is that we start seeing what is wrong with the Self.

Why do we need to see?

We need to see to make any effort towards rectification and reformation.

What is the Maqsad of going into the Companionship of the Ahlullah?

What is the Maqsad?

The Maqsad is reforming the Self. Reforming a person. Changing the life. And that starts with admitting that these are the problems inside me – “these are the problems inside me. My heart is not pure, my heart is dirty, my heart is filthy.” Today we are not ready to accept that.

Today, (it is thought) “I am not ready to accept that my heart is dirty and my heart is filthy. I think my heart is pure.” Then a person will never change till the day of Qayaamah. Such a person can stay in the Companionship of the greatest Wali of Allah in the world. But till the day of Qayaamah he will not change.

Why?

Because he is not there with the Niyat of Islaah. He is not there with the Niyat of reformation. Whatever other Niyat there may be but this (above) is not the Niyat that, “I am here so that I need to read out these problems. I need to do some cutting, I need to do some gardening. I need to have some operations done.” That Niyat if it is not there, then a person is not going to reform. That Niyat is necessary.

So, this is something, generally we miss.

A person starts to think that, how come a certain person is in the Companionship of the Ahlullah for so long and yet he is still the same.

Kuch nahi badla.

Kuch nahi badla.

The sins which he was involved in the beginning, he is still involved in those sins. He is still involved. He will hide them; he will not show them. But he is still involved in all those sins.  There is no difference. Everything is still the same. The Haal of the heart is the same. The sins are the same. Everything is the same.

Why?

On one hand we talk about the effect of the Companionship of the Ahlullah. On the other hand, we see people who have been in the Companionship of the Ahlullah and are still the same. So a person can start getting doubts because the Shaitan is always there to bring doubts into a person. Shaitan is going to bring the doubt in a person when a person makes that observation. Then Shaitan is going to come and say, ‘Look. Look, here is the proof that these Auliya are nothing.’ This is what Shaitan is going to say – ‘Look, this is the proof that these Auliya are nothing. The Sohbat of the Auliya and Ahlullah are nothing. It is a waste of them. Look at these people they have stayed for so long. Nothing has happened to them. So, do not go there. Do not waste your time there. People are not changing.’

So a person thinks “it is true. Something which I can observe with my eyes. I can witness it that people are not changing. So what is the point then?” So a person keeps himself back.

This is what Shaitan does.

But what is the reality?

The reality is that Wi-Fi is ON. But if you are not going to turn on in the phone then that phone can stay on top of the Wi-Fi router till the Day of Qayamah. There is no Wi-Fi going to come inside.

Why?

Because the Wi-Fi is not ON. So are you going to blame the Wi-Fi, that the problem is in the Wi-Fi? No, the problem is not in the Wi-Fi. The Wi-Fi is perfect. It is sending out the signal properly. The Wi-Fi inside the phone is not ON then how is the Wi-Fi going to come? This is our problem. We stay in the Companionship of the Auliya, the Wi-Fi is not going to come. Wi-Fi is not ON. There is no connection. There is no Internet. There is nothing. Then we say, “what, nothing happened.” A person is standing next to the Wi-Fi router and he is standing from morning till night and wondering “why my WhatsApp messages are not coming. I am standing next to the Wi-FI. There must be some problem in the Wi-Fi.” Nothing in the Wi-Fi. You never turned on Wi-Fi in the phone. How are the messages going to come?

So this is our problem today.

That is the reason why, being in the Companionship also but the benefit is not coming.

Why?

Because the Niyat is not correct. The Niyat is not of rectification and reformation.

May Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala grant us that Reality,

May Allah grant us the understanding.

May Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala grant us the Taufeeq to reform and to rectify ourselves before it is too late.

For those who dont know Urdu(can be Farsi couplet also) as im, here is the translation of the couplet:
“One moment spent in the company of the pious
Is better than a hundred years of (voluntary) worship.”

True but as women we cannot really spend time in the company of ahlullah 😦 unless someone studies in a madrasah and they have female teachers in whose company they spend time.

What you have said is very true however they are certainly ways a woman can benefit from the Ahlullah even if she doesnt physically meet them like men do. The most effective way is, having a Murshid – listening to his bayans, doing the set of Mamulat you are given, following his advices so on. There are other ways a woman can benefit without a Murshid as well (reading biographies, listening to bayans for example.) but having a Murshid is the best. Because a Murshid knows you very well, you progress slowly but steadily while in the latter there is no aim or plan.

You are right. I think the latter is the choice for me at least for the time being since I do not have a murshid to provide me guidance.

    1. Since i do not know how it is with you dear sister, if you forexample are inclined to a certain Shaykh, you can get benefit from him (forexample listening to his Bayans, asking questions to him) also even if he isnt your Murshid.
